The Definition of Service:
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, they are considered service animals under the ADA and do not require a license or certificate from a state or local government.
Service dogs perform some of the functions and tasks that the medically compromised individual cannot perform alone. "Seeing eye dogs" are the most familiar of service dogs, however recent medical tests have found a wide variety of conditions which are markedly improved by the gentle presence of a well trained service dog.
There are many different types of service animals that assist persons with personal medical needs in their day-to-day activities, alerting their handler to a medical situation which may go unnoticed by the person, such as changes in insulin levels, cessation of breathing during sleep (apnea), a heart or vascular crisis...and much more. Please consult your physician for complete information.
